Karl

Certified Tutor

Hello! I received an Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from the University of the Ozarks in Clarksville, Arkansas. Because of my degree, I am extremely qualified to tutor different subjects in mathematics. I do great in Algebra, Calculus, and Geometry because I love those subjects as much as I understand them.

While I was obtaining my degree I worked through a school program to tutor fellow students in Algebra and Calculus. I worked with them step by step to help them understand the concepts so they could succeed on their own. I believe that the purpose of a tutor is not to do the work of student, but to help the student develop skills to properly understand what is happening and how to do the work.

When I am not tutoring or talking about math or other sciences, I am playing video games, exercising, reading, or writing scifi/fantasy. I am a nerd, and a proud one, and I love to help others.

What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is to help the student find his/her own success by helping the student establish proper skills and technique, and boosting confidence.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In my first session with a student, I would establish a sense of trust and also of purpose in helping the student. I would also cover some basic material on how we can work together.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I will help the student become a more independent learner by working with them, not doing the work for them.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

It is all about confidence, positive thinking, and proper motivation.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Develop a proper method so they can understand the concept in their own line of thinking.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I find that building up a relationship of trust and friendship help the work to start. When a student trusts his or her tutor, the material is conveyed and understood better and the student succeeds easier.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would focus on the student's confidence. Students need to know that they can succeed in the subject they struggle in. I would start with small goals that build up over time to show that the student can do the material.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

After I teach a subject, I ask the student to walk me through some practice problems. I make sure the problems focus on the concepts they need to learn so I can tell that they have it understood.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I build students' confidence in a subject by making sure they understand that they can do a good job in a subject. I find this is achieved best by accomplishing small, personally-set goals that build to larger goals.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I take some time initially to get to know the students that I will tutor. When you know a student personally, you will know what needs to be worked on and how best to go about doing it.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I typically use pen, paper, pencil, computer, calculator, and anything that math work sometimes requires.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Since different people have different speeds, I would match my pace to the pace that they need to make sure they understand what they are reading.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

It depends on the needs of the student. I go the pace of the student and see what exactly they need assistance on.
