What is your teaching philosophy?
Find out the root of the problem and work to eradicate that. Not everyone has the same problem; therefore, one cannot use the same method to teach or to learn.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Discover the student's problems and needs.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Teach him/her how to help him/herself.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
That would depend on what motivates the student. It would have to be tailored to the student, i.e., grades, college admission, parental approval, etc.

Try different methods.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Find out what is the student is struggling with - vocabulary, sentence structures, disabilities, etc., and go from there.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Understand the student and discover his needs.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
Find the student's motivation.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Test what the student comprehends by asking questions regarding the materials learned.

By showing him how far he has come from his hard work.

Asking questions and noticing details during the tutoring sessions.

It varies depending on the student and the individual needs.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
Whatever would work best with the subject, the student, and the school.
