What is your teaching philosophy?

To work with that student in whatever works best for them. Being patient, compassionate and caring.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I will get to know that student and get a feel for how I can best help them. I try to make them laugh and feel confident.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

We all struggle and have different ways of learning, but with a little guidance we can improve. I will give step by step plans, guidelines and goals that are within reason to achieve.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Reassurance, reassurance! I will try to make the subject fun and interesting, remind the student that we all get frustrated, but it can happen.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would break it down, simplify it, and use context around difficult words. I show patience and praise when they demonstrate a learned concept.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would go slowly and try to make it understandable by explaining and using wording they can grasp. I would be very patient.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Getting to know that student's individual needs, and lots of laughter and reassurance. Humor is key.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would do everything in my power to make it interesting and try to make it fun.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I will try anything once! I think explaining at a level they can grasp with demonstration and understanding helps.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Laughter, reassurance, and a reminder that we all struggle and have frustrations. I praise all that the student does right!

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

By talking with them, looking for cues such as anxiety, frustration, or impatience. I would encourage that student to trust me and let me guide them.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Every student is different and I understand that each person needs their own individual approach. I have to be the flexible one to meet their needs.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I will bring whatever works best for that individual student. Whether a book, printed materials, the Internet or just verbal skills, I will use what best works for that student.
