Certified Tutor

I graduated from The University of Rhode Island with a BA in Political Science and a Minor in Psychology. I earned an MS in International Communication from St. Johns University. After working for several years, I am changing careers to Speech-Language Pathology because I enjoy working with people and using clinical applications of psychology, language, and communication to help others to find their voice. I am passionate about learning and communication, and the role that psychology and language play in the learning process. Since high school, I have tutored elementary through college-level students in a variety of subjects (primarily liberal arts.) Everyone has a unique learning style. As a tutor, I identify and utilize study techniques that each student feels works best for them. When a student is not sure how to approach a subject, I gain their perspective and guide them through breaking down the material into manageable sections. My ultimate goal is to enhance a students learning experience as much as possible. Learning is a two-way street, and I love when students give me the opportunity to learn from them as well!

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I try to highlight real-life applications, or discover how it might be relevant to the student and/or their interests.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

A great way to test your understanding of a concept is to "teach" it to someone else. This helps reinforce your understanding and highlights parts that still need to be reviewed.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Everyone learns differently, so the first step is to determine the student's best learning style and study habits. Then we can use techniques that would work best for that student, whether it's pictures, flashcards, discussion, etc.
