Certified Tutor

I started my career attending a military high school in Nigeria where I learned basic discipline such as being timely, planning my schedule, and leadership skills. I then proceeded to a 6th form school where I obtained an Advanced Level Certificate in chemistry, mathematics, and physics from the Cambridge university examination board in Nigeria. After my 6th form education, I moved to New York and started college at BMCC. I spent about three semesters at BMCC then I transferred to City College where I intend to obtain a bachelors degree in bio-medical engineering. My future aspiration after my BSC is to go to graduate school for my masters and PHD at Princeton University. I also intend to join the United States Army where I plan to practice my bio-medical profession by helping the disabled veterans. I took particular interest in math back in Nigeria where I tutored students preparing them for their GED exam. I also volunteered with New York Cares (NYC), and I tutored in projects like computer training for adult and math games for middle and junior school students. Volunteering at NYC helped improve my teaching skills and expose me to knowing how and why students are scared of math. My approach to tutoring has basically been student dependent where I work at the student's pace and ensure accurate learning in my teaching sessions. Also I make math feel like its alive by using life examples and approach. I love playing soccer and watching movies at my free time.

What is your teaching philosophy?

As a math tutor, I believe in following my student’s pace and mixing up my teaching with real life applications. My students are at the center of my lesson planning process. My first goal is to create an atmosphere that encourages participation and involvement. Most people learn better if they know how it affects them physically or a better way to imagine; my goal is to make my students connect what they learn with their daily life. Doing this, things learned will stick better and at times makes them more attentive. Sometimes the simplest teaching techniques can work the best, so I use charts and diagrams and other visual representations to illustrate.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

My first session with a student is always a revision session for material previously learned that will be needed for the subject the student needs help on.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

My review outlines things the student need to understand on each topic; this helps students become an independent learner, since they know what is needed to be done.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

My ways of motivating my students are solving problems from easy to complex, relating each topic to real life, giving the student the opportunity to explain in their words what the material is about and walking through enough examples on materials covered.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I relate material with each student’s area of interest. If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, my approach will be simplifying the material with real life example, or a times show a cartoon or anime that demonstrates better.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I attempt to inspire growth in my students by giving them tools to take into other disciplines and into other domains of their life. For students who are struggling with reading comprehension, I relate materials to real life and recommend imagining what is being read happening in real life.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I relate the materials I teach with things that influence the student.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I use charts, diagrams and other visual representations to engage students struggling with a subject.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Solving enough problems together and handing out problems on materials discussed are techniques I use to ensure student understanding.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Handing out problems to cover all aspects of the material discussed; I believe the builds a student's confidence in a subject.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I evaluate my student's needs based on performance and contributions to the materials shared.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I move at my student's pace and also give examples based on the student’s interests.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I use charts, diagrams and other visual representations to illustrate.
