I received a Bachelor of Arts in English from Webster University, along with a minor in Environmental Studies, and a Master or Arts in English from Southeast Missouri State University. Since graduate school, I have been teaching English Composition, Literature and Reading to traditional, non-traditional, international, online and dual credit students. My tutoring experience includes English, Writing, French, Reading and Math to a variety of ages, but my passion is Writing, particularly to high school and college students. This subject tends to be one that many students loathe and only take a few courses because they are required. My strategies include progressive approaches to traditional concepts, particularly using hands-on techniques to improve retention. When tutoring students, I ensure they are able to use familiar concepts to understand the unfamiliar ones, applying them to real life. If a student can recognize practical relevance and life application, then he/she tends to understand the importance of a particular skill or concept, which in turn increases his/her ability to use it. These techniques have proven effective because many students enter a "required" learning experience with drudgery and hesitance. By the end of these classes and sessions, my students have expressed my classes and sessions are among their "favorite" experiences, both because they are fun and the students finally understand what they struggled with for so long. To connect with others in life, one must first understand the world and his/her place in it. Education is one tool that helps students understand themselves and the world around them, making the two easier to connect and comprehend. When I am not working with students or spending time with my family, I enjoy nature and outdoor activities, art in all mediums particularly reading, film, music and photography. I also enjoy traveling and cooking.
