Certified Tutor
As a graduate of Curry College, I have student teaching experience on the fourth grade and fifth grade levels in a self-contained classroom, in both suburban and urban school districts. I graduated from Fordham University with a Masters of Science in Childhood Education and Special Education. I also have two professional New York State certifications in Students with Disabilities 1-6 and Childhood Education 1-6. I have been teaching since April 2014. I have worked with different age level students from K-8 with different disabilities (Emotionally Disturbed, Intellectual Disabilities, Autism and Multiple Disabilities). I have obtained a certification in Life Space Crisis Intervention. I have held different out-of-classroom positions such as Math Enrichment Specialist, Reading Specialist, Data Specialist, Testing Coordinator, Technology Specialist and Curriculum Specialist. I had a key role of the Instructional Cabinet and a lead teacher for the Early Childhood team. I created and implemented the Early Childhood Literacy curriculum. I have an Advanced Graduate Certificate in Educational Leadership from Stony Brook University. My School Building Leader New York State Certification is currently pending. I have completed a yearlong internship with the principal and four assistant principals. I have led meetings for my administrators and conducted several professional developments for staff.
I have been tutoring for several years working with kids ages 3 to 14 in Math, English and Handwriting without Tears. My favorite subject to teach is Reading, specifically Phonics. I feel giving the right instruction will provide the proper foundation for students learning to read. I am a highly enthusiastic, devoted and creative individual. I am extremely qualified for teaching Special education and Reading. I have experience in and out of special education classrooms.
I have access to the Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA) if your child needs formal reading I testing. This testing measures, oral fluency, decoding and reading comprehension. Recently, I tutor a first grade special education learning disabled student in reading and math. She was reading on a kindergarten level and within 4 months she is reading at the end of first grade. She increased by 5 reading levels and increased her comprehension to the beginning of second grade.
I also have used the writing process and Balance Literacy Model for the past 9 years. I also include using an iPad during my tutoring to increase phonics, reading fluency and multi-sensory learning.
I'm also trained in Singapore Math, specifically Math in Focus. I have trained many teachers on how to use the program. I also have great experience using the Engage NY Common Core Curriculum.
