AP Psychology Tutoring FAQ
AP Psychology gives high school students the opportunity to study human thought processes, motivation, and behavior in a course that presents them with college-level challenges and expectations. Students who earn excellent grades in the course can gain an impressive achievement to add to their transcripts, and those who earn excellent scores on the cumulative AP Psychology exam can be awarded with college credits long before setting a foot on campus. Covering everything from the history of the field to specific aspects of various theories, from the analysis of data in a variety of forms to the designing of statistically and scientifically valid experiments, AP Psychology can easily feel like too much to handle in the course of a semester, especially to a student who is already taking a full and rigorous course load and has a variety of extracurricular commitments. Don't give up on your ambition to conquer AP Psychology - get help instead!
Varsity Tutors can help you connect with Psychology tutors all across the country, and the assistance can make a big difference in the way you approach your class and AP exam. With the assistance of the educational directors, you can quickly create a student profile that tells tutors about your course, the content you need assistance with, your learning habits, schedule, personality, and other factors that can impact the results of tutoring. You are able to find local and long-distance tutors available in AP Psychology who have the knowledge, and first-hand experience necessary to provide insight and guidance during your advanced course.
AP Psychology instructors are able to identify the exact aspects of the subject that you need to focus on in order to succeed. They use a combination of assessments, practice work, and conversations to quickly pinpoint areas that you excel in, as well as ones that you need to work in. They can use this insight to design a curriculum for your AP Psychology tutoring sessions that addresses these topics and concepts specifically. Your sessions can then help you master precisely what you need to learn to succeed, allowing them to be extremely efficient.
You're free to work at your own pace without worrying about keeping up with the rest of a study group or class. You can ask questions as they arise, as well as ask questions without being in a tutoring session. Your tutor can even adjust lesson plans on the fly if you make sense of a concept more quickly than planned, or need extra time to understand a particular topic completely. AP Psychology tutoring is all about helping you gain the foundational skills that you will use in later psychology classes and on the AP exam. In addition, you are free to request more or fewer tutoring sessions at any given time, whether you have a tighter schedule or you have a test coming up. You can even have online tutoring sessions.
When it comes time to start studying for the exam, your tutor can help you organize your time in an effective manner, allowing you to address each concept the exam will test. They are familiar with the content you will see on the exam, and be able to adjust the lesson plan to focus on those areas. You may simply refresh certain topics, or spend several sessions on other, harder to grasp ones. Your tutor can help you work through practice problems modeled after the different kinds found on the AP Psychology exam, and can even help you learn test-taking strategies specific to each of the exam sections.
If you're ready to get connected with and start working with a knowledgeable tutor and start making sense of the complex, detailed content this class and its exam covers, call Varsity Tutors today!

Recent AP Psychology Tutoring Session Notes
With the student, I also created a system for her to effectively study a lot of material. I showed her a better way to take reading notes using bullet points; suggested an approach to studying the chapter, by reviewing sidebars, graphs, and the questions throughout and at the end of the chapter. We then reviewed her chapter on neurons, etc. We also discussed a way to handle the stress she was feeling with the subject.
We went over the student's paper and discussed her understanding of the concepts as well as fine-tuned her approach in order to take into consideration variation in personalities. We then went over the topics in her chapter that she will be tested on in order to review and make sure she understood them. When she was unclear about something or when she had a hard time remembering certain concepts we went over them in more detail, and I gave her several examples to help make the concepts less abstract.
Continued prepping for test on Classical. He is able to recall some of the concepts better than during previous sessions. Seems to have a better grasp of topics.
We began a review for the student's unit test on Cognition, Thinking and Language. She had a slideshow and note from the teacher, which we reviewed slide by slide while referring to the textbook, giving examples, and elaborating on the information contained on the slide. I had her teach me a lot of the material and give her own examples as a study tool, and a way for her to better remember all of the information. Her class average is a 92, and she is hoping to bring it up to a 95. We also completed an extra credit paper comparing Skinner and Chomsky.
Today was my first day meeting with the student. I got to meet the family who I got along with very well. Started off just getting to know the student to make sure she was comfortable around me and then went over the basic overview of what the psychology test is like. She told me that she mainly struggled with the aspects of the class that involved biology because of the heavy memorization that it required. She also needed to get a better knowledge of famous psychologists and their experiments. We worked on a lot of vocabulary - she started off excellently getting most of them spot on. When we got to the brain however and identifying different parts of the brain and their function she struggled a lot. Spent a majority of the time working through vocab and going over the different parts of the brain a few times at the end.
We covered the different areas of the brain (all of the lobes) as well as the 'nature vs nurture' concept of psychology. He was able to recall the different parts and functions of the brain by the end of our session. He is going to study the concepts more before his test tomorrow.
