Example Question #21 : How To Find The Sale Price
A shirt was originally selling for $28. It is now $21. What percent was it marked down?
To solve this, you can set up an equation: . Translated into words, the new price equals the original price minus the discount. Isolate for and you get .
The negative sign signals that the percentage is a mark down. Convert the fraction into a percentage and you get .
Example Question #21 : How To Find The Sale Price
Julia wants to buy a shirt which costs . When she approaches the cashier, he tells Julia that the shirt is actually on sale for off. How much does the shirt cost with the sale applied?
In order to find the sale price, we must subtract 35% of $25.95 from $25.95.
35% of $25.95 is 0.35 times $25.95 whic is $9.08.
$25.95 minus $9.08 is $16.87.
Example Question #22 : How To Find The Sale Price
Which would save you more money on a purchase of $200? $20 off, or 15% off?
$20 off, since 15% off only saves you $13.33.
15% off, since $20 is only 5% off.
$20 off, since 20 is greater than 15.
$20 off, since you'd be spending only $180 and with 15% off you'd be spending $190.
15% off, since that saves you $30, which is $10 more.
15% off, since that saves you $30, which is $10 more.
To directly compare the two discounts, one method would be to figure out how many dollars you'd save with 15% off. To figure out 15% of $200, multiply 200 by 0.15. This would give you 30, meaning that you'd be saving $30 with this discount. Since $30 is more money than $20, needless to say, it's a better discount.
The reason the other choice stating that 15% off would save you more is wrong is that it says $20 is 5%, when it is actually 10%.
Example Question #2754 : Algebra 1
Stacey needs a dress for her cousin's roommate's wedding. She finds a dress for that is on sale, off. How much is she going to pay for it?
There are a couple of different ways that we can solve this problem.
We could figure out what 20% of the original price is and then subtract that. We find 20% of $139.99 by converting 20% into its decimal equivalent 0.2 and multiplying. This gives us 27.998. Subtracting that from 139.99 gives us 111.99.
We could also figure out that if we are subtracting 20%, we will be paying 80% of the original price, since 20% + 80% would give us 100%, the full price. So we could find 80% of 139.99, multiplying 0.8 times 139.99 to get 111.99.
Example Question #21 : How To Find The Sale Price
A coat goes on sale for off. If the coat originally costs , what is the sale price of the coat?
In order to find the sales price of the coat we need to convert the sales percentage into a decimal. To do this, divide it by one hundred or just move the decimal two spaces to the left. From here we can can calculate the new price of the coat by subtracting the decimal percentage from the original and then multiplying the original price by this new decimal.
First, we will convert the sales percent to a decimal.
Substitute this number and the original price of the coat into the above formula to calculate the sale price.
Round up to two decimal places.
