I'm from a small town in southeast Michigan, where I went to high school before moving to Nashville for university. I just graduated from Vanderbilt University with a Bachelor's degree in neuroscience and Russian. During my time in high school and college, I tutored in a volunteer capacity on a wide range of subjects, from English and essay editing to calculus to ACT prep. I am hoping to spend the next year traveling (I am currently living in Bucharest, Romania!) before applying to medical school. Aside from tutoring, I would be happy to commiserate with you about the stresses of applying to higher education.

Igniting a desire to learn in my students drives my passion for working with them. I have supported Kindergarten through college-level students in their pursuit of academic success. I have taught and tutored students in all subject areas and ability levels; working with both neurotypical and neurodivergent students. I have worked extensively with students in math and language arts. I am a proud alumni of the University of Pennsylvania (MS in Education/concentration: Special Education and Urban Education), and Kent State University (BS in Education). I especially love working with students in math and language arts (high school English) because these two subjects are the bedrock of all other learning. Once a student gains knowledge and confidence in language arts and math, they master the material in their other subjects quicker.Because I know that all students learn differently, I work with students to determine their learning style and teach them from an asset base approach. In other words, I start with what they do well and build upon that until they reach the objective they need to grasp.When not teaching or tutoring students, I am an avid sports fan. I enjoy embarking on adventures with my daughters; exploring new sites, experiences, and restaurants.

Right after graduation, I worked as an academic and test prep tutor as well as admissions consultant in Hong Kong. For the past two years, I worked with a number of students to help prepare them for college in the United States.Even though I tutor a wide range of subjects, I enjoy teaching English and standardized test preparation the most. I love helping my students find beauty in the English language in addition to helping them achieve their college goals. I also love working with students on their college essays because that's when I feel I get to know my students the best, as we talk through dreams, aspirations, and life experiences. I view education as a skill; education is not around to help us learn specific things, but rather education teaches us how to learn.Outside the classroom, I'm a well-traveled certified SCUBA diver who enjoys spending time kayaking and weightlifting. I also played ice hockey through college and performed as a classical pianist on campus and in Europe. When I'm not feeling so active, I can be found knitting, crocheting, reading, writing, and daydreaming about where I want to travel to next. I'm working on becoming a true Renaissance woman.

I graduated from Columbia University with my BA in Neuroscience and Behavior as well as having completed the premedical track. Gaining this rigorous science background allowed me to pursue my love of science and medicine, and it also gave me a thorough understanding of what it takes to study and learn efficiently. Effective study strategies, dedication, patience, and some sheer persistence are things I am very familiar with and share with those I tutor.Learning is a process that doesn't stop in school. For me, one form that continued learning has been conducting an extensive amount of scientific research at prominent research institutions on topics ranging from the causes of obesity to kneecap pain to why mosquitoes are attracted to some people and not others. Continuously asking questions is a major component of research, and I encourage the students I tutor to not just memorize content, but ask questions until they really understand what they are learning. When working through concepts, problems, and test-taking strategies, I make sure my students ask questions until they know why they are solving a problem a certain way or how a specific concept fits into the bigger picture. This strategy boosts student confidence and facilitates long-term academic success!
