Home Economics, why did they take that away?
My mother and father tell me stories about how when they were in school they had home economics class that would teach them sewing, balancing check books, budgeting, and cooking skills were some of the basic life skills they were taught.
They always talked about how much this helped them with simple life skills growing up.
With technology giving us access to online banking there is not much check writing or use for balancing a check book these days. Budgeting is something that can be done with online use but my parents giving me advise on how to budget can and will come in handy for use during college and moving forward in my future.
I luckily have obtained some cooking skills from my mother, but to hear stories of how she learned etiquette of cooking and dining from home economics would come in handy, some other students might not have families that teach them these things and I believe that a lot of people could benefit from having this training while in school.
Sewing is something my mother will admit is very hard to do if you do not do it enough, her trying to teach me was an adventure to say the least. It seems a silly skill to learn but in reality can come in very handy in adulthood!
It just seems that there are so many life skills that could be updated and taught in home economics that could be updated to accommodate the current life skills that students will to get through life in this time. Maybe showing them how to utilize online banking and budgeting. Even teaching basic cooking skills. There may even be other life skills that could be incorporated to assist in helping high school students get their independence.
