Rockstar Radiation Therapist by Zoë - February 2025 Scholarship Essay

My future career goal is to be a Radiation Therapist, treating cancer patients, and still continuing performing music on the side. I have always had a strong passion for music, participating in years of musicals and chorus, as well as taking private voice lessons in classical and musical theater styles. Currently, I am the lead vocalist of a hard rock band through Elvio Fernandes’ ROC Star Academy. While I love music, I know it is not a realistic career. I am pursuing Radiation Therapy because I want a career where I can help others and make a difference. However, I want to make an effort to keep music in my life and continue performing on the side, either with a band or in a duo act. I know I will succeed in both of these fields because I am a hard worker and driven by my passion. In high school, I received numerous academic awards, including high honor roll, the University of Rochester Bausch and Lomb Honorary Science Award, and my New York State Seal of Biliteracy in Spanish. In addition I have also been recognized for many musical achievements such as All-County Chorus, Area All-State Chorus, the American Choral Directors Association All-Eastern High School Honor Choir, and participation in the Rochester Philharmonic League Young Artist Competition. I graduated from high school sixth in my class of over 160 students in June of 2024 with just over 40 college credits from high school. My original plan after high school was to partake in a 2+2 program, starting at Finger Lakes Community College and transferring to SUNY Upstate Medical University. However, with the amount of college credits I already have, I will be graduating from Finger Lakes Community College with my Associates Degree in Liberal Arts this Spring of 2025, after just one year. Next Fall (2025), I plan to attend SUNY Upstate Medical University to study Radiation Therapy. SUNY Upstate offers a chance to participate in clinical rotations, where I will receive hands-on experience. In addition, this school has a very high graduation rate, as well as a high job placement rate. I truly believe that this path is the best path for me, and will help me accomplish all of my goals and succeed in my future.
