College: The Place Where Individuals Grow by Zoe - November 2016 Scholarship Essay
The part of my college experience I will be most thankful for is taking full responsibility of myself and becoming an independent person. Coming out of high school, I will have lived at home for 17 years. I have been taken care of by my parents all my life and they have always been next to me at any moment to guide me in the right direction. In order to be a successful and organized college student, it is important for individuals to be able to manage time, organize their tasks and perform in a mature manner. Most students, especially incoming freshmen, are used to having an adult by their side to push and motivate them to do their best. When those individuals transition their way into college, their parents and voices of encouragement will not be around to remind them to do their tasks. In college, students are responsible for motivating themselves and carefully planning their tasks to be completed in a timely manner. College students are expected to be able to take care of themselves as well as properly manage their education. It is important that all college-level students can perform without having someone else to tell them to do something, or without having someone else to do something for them. College students should be mature, independent individuals who rely on themselves to succeed. I am looking forward to taking advantage of the amount of independence that will be given to me, and being a responsible person.
Being away from home and attending college will give me the opportunity to practice being prompt and diligent. When I get out of college and into the business world, I can take on my job as a mature adult. In college, most students develop their most important values of their life if they have not previously. Upon graduating and obtaining a job, employers look for individuals with strong work ethic, responsibility, and self-motivation. Developing strong work ethic is important because employers expect their employees to complete assigned tasks efficiently and in a timely manner. Being on time and being responsible for one’s own actions and behavior is vital to being a successful individual.
In conclusion, I will be thankful that I have been given the opportunity to grow as an individual and become a mature adult. When someone thinks of the college experience, they most likely think of sorority or fraternity life, or attending sports events in support of their university. In my opinion, the most valuable quality an individual can obtain coming out of college is their independence and amount of self-motivation.
