My School Year During 1984 by Zi Tian - July 2013 Scholarship Essay
One of the english courses offered in my school, had you to read the novel 1984 by George Orwell. I did not take that course. My course had me reading Brave New World, which was similar to 1984 in which both books take place in a dystopian setting. 1984 piqued my interest one-third of the way through and never let me down. the story was great and the twist near the end was something I never saw coming. The message I got out of this story, to me, was mind-blowing because the message was so true but it's a message that everyone denies. The message was that the human mind is stubborn, and strong-willed, but it doesn't mean that it can't be changed. The thing that changes a person's mind is society, and how the phrase "If you can't beat 'em, join'em" is more forced onto you than it is a choice. That is what I loved about 1984; as you kept learning aboutWinston Smith, the main character, you kept rooting for him, and that he might've been the one to have rebeled against the government and won. In the end he failed, and for all we know there could've been tons of people like him in that world, who also ended up loving the government in the end. Ah, books, one of humanities greatest gifts.
