A True Impact by Zetta - November 2019 Scholarship Essay

When I entered high school, I knew I wanted to do something memorable. I had my heart set on being the lead role in one of our theater productions. Although I ended up being cast as Glinda the Good Witch in my high school’s production of “The Wizard of Oz” and the Queen of Hearts in “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland”, I do not think of these as true impacts for my school. The dictionary’s definition of an impact is “having a strong effect on someone or something”. Indeed, I may have impacted a few members of the audience, but there is another activity I do that I feel better defines the phrase “positive impact”.
Since my freshman year, I have been a board member of my high school’s Matthew 25 club. This is not your average club. The members of Mathew 25 are tasked with deciding where our school’s donation money should go every week. Not only do we positively impact our high school, but also our community. This is the main reason why I am one of the few students who has been a part of this club for all four years. I love serving others. Knowing that a thirty minute after school club is saving locals from having their water/electricity turned off or from losing their home is one of the best feelings you could have. Receiving their “thank you” notes is even more gratifying. Reading line by line how we, the Mathew 25 board, helped keep their lights on for another month always makes us smile. It’s truly eye opening. You don’t have to be the lead role in a play, the star quarterback, or the president of the student council to positively impact your school. You can simply be a club member with a passion for helping others.
