Growing Up by Zena - November 2017 Scholarship Essay

College is all about new experiences. Being able to study abroad would give me new experiences that I wouldn't be able to get anywhere else and allow me to grow in knowledge and life skills.

Growing up in a small town has been interesting to say the least. On one hand, I have been able to grow up in a community, surrounded by people who truly care about me and my well-being. However, on the other hand, I have not had many opportunities to experience cultures outside my own. I believe a truly educated person has done their best to learn all they can about what they are studying. So, looking at how people study in a country across the globe or from the perspective of a culture vastly different from my own would give me irreplaceable knowledge that contributes to how I learn and how I look at the world.

Not only would studying abroad give me knew knowledge that I can carry with me for the rest of my life, it would also provide me experiences that I would not be able to get anywhere else. Traveling by yourself in a country new to you takes incredible maturity that I think is necessary for being prosperous in college. Living on my own and learning how to truly take care of myself would make me ready for being at college as well as entering the workforce.

Studying abroad is something I think everyone should experience. It would bring me the open mindedness and knowledge of the world around me necessary for versing a college classroom as well as a new perspective and way to learn. Traveling and staying in a foreign country would also teach me life experiences key to having a successful college experience. College is all about learning and growing and I think there is no better way to do that than to study abroad.
