A Future Built on Compassion and Access by Zaniya - June 2026 Scholarship Essay
If I could design a project to improve my school and community, I would create a Health Equity and STEM Mentorship Initiative focused on increasing access to healthcare education, mentorship, and academic resources for underserved students. This project would combine my passion for science with my commitment to helping others overcome barriers similar to those I have faced.
Growing up in a low-income family and as a minority student in advanced academic courses, I often struggled with self-doubt and a lack of representation in STEM fields. Although I was fortunate to have supportive family members and mentors, many students do not have access to the guidance needed to pursue careers in healthcare, pharmacy, nursing, or science. I believe every student deserves the opportunity to explore their potential regardless of their background or financial circumstances.
The program would pair high school students with mentors from healthcare and STEM professions, including pharmacists, nurses, scientists, and college students pursuing related degrees. Through workshops, students would learn about career pathways, college preparation, scholarship opportunities, and study skills. The initiative would also host health awareness events that provide information about preventive care, nutrition, and healthcare resources available within the community.
This project is especially important to me because of my personal experiences. Being born prematurely exposed me to the importance of quality healthcare from an early age. Later, losing my grandfather to an illness that went untreated because of limited resources showed me how unequal access to healthcare can affect families and communities. These experiences inspired my goal of becoming a pharmaceutical scientist and advocating for greater healthcare accessibility.
In addition to promoting health education, the project would focus on building confidence in young people. One of the most important lessons I have learned is that success begins with believing in your own capabilities. By connecting students with mentors who encourage and support them, I hope to help them develop the confidence to pursue challenging academic goals and careers they may have once thought were out of reach.
Through education, mentorship, and service, this initiative would empower students to succeed academically while creating a healthier and more informed community. By investing in young people today, we can build a future where opportunity, knowledge, and quality healthcare are accessible to everyone.
