Which academic subject did you learn the most from in high school? How did it help you grow as a student? by Zandra - August 2016 Scholarship Essay
Growing up in a very rural area, not speaking correct grammar was part of the norm. As a toddler we were taught to speak with long vowel words with a short vowel sound. I can only assume our granny, nana, gigi or grandmothers thought of this as being cute. In all actuality, most of them were uneducated and really didn't know how to speak with correct grammar. The more I advanced in high school and adventured outside of my rural community, I begun to realize the importance of correct grammar. Therefore, I learned the most and was helped to grow as a student, from my Oral Communication class.
Oral Communication class has your English, Reading, and Writing classes all wrapped in one. In this class you will learn when and where to use your verbs, adverbs or adjectives to make sure the sentence sounds right. I learned when I should use plural or singular nouns and pronouns, which I didn't quite understand in the past. When I learned how to form a sentences correctly to make sense and learned to put it all together for a paragraph. But the proof reading I learned in this class was the key. You must proof read your work at least three times or more to find mistakes. Oral Communication class is all about presentation and giving speeches. My teacher taught me how to appropriately dress, stand in front of crowd and speak well. Thanks to my Oral Communication class, i know how to give a proper presentation before a class. When writing papers for other classes I use what I learned from my Oral Communications class to make sure the overview and format of the paper is correct. That class thought me a lot, but most important it taught me to have self-confidence, and I can use that in my everyday living.
