Has it really been 10 years? by Zachia - June 2023 Scholarship Essay

I’ve been in Europe for the last five years and am currently getting ready for my job in my apartment in Japan, where I recently moved. How did I get here? After graduating high school and attending Spelman College to study international studies and joining the Air Force ROTC. While studying, I learned four different languages which I now use in my career in diplomacy. Looking back, I have spent a lot of the last few years traveling and while I’ve had homes; I spend most of my time in hotels.

I remember saying when I was younger that I was going to see the world. I can satisfyingly say that I have seen most of the world. While there are still plenty of places I want to visit, I’ve seen so much and have been able to help so many people. I’ve been a representative of those who need the voice to speak, and I have formed positive relationships internationally. This is all I have ever wanted to do in life.

It’s not all about work either, I still have close relations with my friends and family, filling me with joy. If I had not chosen to study international studies ten years ago, I do not believe I could have made it to this point. My education gave me the knowledge I needed to go further in life and continue down my chosen path.

As I put on my coat and feed my snake before I say “See you later” to my best friend since middle school and set out onto the streets of Japan to catch the train to work. I can happily say there is nowhere and no one I’d rather be.
