A Teacher Learns More Than a Student by Zacheriah - January 2015 Scholarship Essay
In the academic world there are many different types of learners. People learn by hearing information given to them in lectures, reading books or presentation slides, watching videos, writing information into a notebook, or getting hands on experience with the material. As a result of these types of learners, some teachers struggle with incorporating every learners needs. However, there is a way to help all of the different types of learners at the same time. To aid with this, teachers who struggle with catering to a broad range of learners should find ways to have their students teach material.
Encouraging students to teach material so others can understand is a power teaching tool in itself. The first reason this is such a powerful tool is understanding. If a student understands the material well enough to be able to teach it to others, then that student has a deeper understanding of the material than if they were to just sit in class with a vacant stare. The second reason student teaching is such a powerful tool is communication. This goes hand in hand with understanding in the sense that if a student is able to clearly communicate the material to others, then that student has a better picture of how all the information fits together. The third reason teaching is such a powerful tool is planning. As any teacher knows, it takes time to carefully craft a lesson plan that the students will understand. If this same amount of time is used by a student to create a lesson, then it gives the student more time to take in the information, and it also gives them valuable time management skills for success in their academics and careers. In conclusion, teachers who struggle with different types of learners should find opportunities for their students to teach. This will give them a greater knowledge of the material, and it will teach them valuable life skills.
