Motivation and Focus as Pillars of Success by Zachary - April 2024 Scholarship Essay

My name is Zachary Lowe, a rising freshman at Bates College, Maine. I feel both privileged and enthusiastic about the opportunity to advance my education in Law, Legal Studies, and Political Science/Government - fields I cherish deeply. My passion for these fields is beholden to a simple philosophy - that “success is my motivation and failure is not an option."

In my high school years, I maintained a GPA of 3.95, a testament to my academic focus, grit, and dedication to achieving my set goals. My journey so far has been a series of learning curves, each curve bolstering my resolve, heightening my motivation, and sharpening my focus on my academic endeavors.

I am often asked, "Zachary, what motivates you to relentlessly pursue your academic goals?" My initial and sustained motivation springs from the belief that knowledge is not just power, but also a linchpin of societal change. Moreover, my motivation stems from the value I place on success which, to me, is not just achieving a set target but continuing to attain greater heights. The comprehensive learning and development opportunities in Law, Legal Studies, and Political Science/Government at Bates aloft my motivation to another level.

Failure is a powerful foe. But I have learned that running into failures does not signify the end; rather, they are opportunities that bring me face-to-face with reality. The reality is, failures are stepping stones to success, in academics, and in life. Each time I run into a failure, I utilize it as a remarkable learning experience, analyzing where I went wrong and what I must do differently.

Staying focused amidst distractions and obstacles has been my trump card to staying on course. I believe that a focused mind is the actual key to success. I have set personal goals throughout my life to maintain this focus. At Bates College, my primary goal is not just to emerge with a degree in Law, Legal Studies, and Political Science/Government, but to gain an all-encompassing knowledge and develop skills that would address societal inequities.

Ultimately, my motivation and focus boil down to my desire to make a meaningful contribution to my community. As a learned individual, I understand that the power to effect tangible change lies in the grasp of knowledge and skilled application of this knowledge.

In conclusion, as I embark on my college journey at Bates, it is my staunch motivation, robust learning from failures and unwavering focus that push me to stride towards my academic goals. This Varsity Tutors College Scholarship will not merely relieve the financial strain, but will also serve as an endorsement of my abilities and potential, fueling my motivation to carve out a meaningful future through my educational pursuits. As a deserving candidate, I am confident that this scholarship will catalyze my journey towards a fulfilling future in Law, Legal Studies, and Political Science/Government.

Thank you for considering my application.
