Motivated To Learn by Zachary - August 2017 Scholarship Essay

As a student, I have struggled with my physics classes. I had such a hard time conceptualizing the problems presented to us and did not perform well on tests. However, the topics that we learned absolutely fascinated me. When our professor would engage us in a discussion about theoretical physics or other cool applications that interested me, I would be much more motivated to study and learn what was being presented.
If I was a college professor, I would teach a physics class the same way. I would have discussions about subjects such as electricity and magnetism that got the students involved in the class, instead of droning on in a lecture hall. One of the best moments I had in a physics class was finally understanding a difficult subject. I love helping people learn, and so seeing that moment of realization in another student would be very rewarding.
Another reason I would teach physics would be to help expand the STEM field. We can always use more scientists, engineers, and mathematicians to advance our technology and improve our society. Even now, our current technology and understanding of the universe is increasing at an exponential rate, and by the time I would have the chance to become a college professor, plenty of new and exciting topics will have emerged that I will be able to share with college students. I eagerly look forward to the future and all that it holds for us.
