Are leadership skills necessary for college success? Why or why not? by Zach - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

In a way, leadership skills are necessary for success. At the same time, in some instances it does not matter if a person is a good leader or not. A lot goes back to the career that a student is looking into. For example, if a student wants to be a teacher after high school, than it is crucial for him or her to have good leadership skills. On the flip side, if a student wants to work behind the scenes and not interact with others, than their leadership skills will not matter. There are multiple ways to be a leader. Some people lead through their words and others through their actions. In my opinion, words mean nothing if there are no actions to follow the words. I am very kept to myself, but I do my best to lead by example. If I did not lead by example like I do, then I may not get the chance to impact somebody’s life like I would if I acted as a leader towards them. As far as college success goes, as a college student leadership is not crucial for success. To be successful in college, a student needs to have motivation to do their best, and they need to set goals for what they want to achieve. Often times, if a student does those two things, they will be demonstrating that example and others will notice without him even realizing that he made a difference.

In conclusion, leadership skills are not necessary for college success. However, the career field that a given student decides to pursue will change the importance of leadership skills. If a student possesses no leadership skills, he/she has no chance at running for president. However, if he/she is really good with computers, they can work behind the scenes and be very successful. If a student is motivated to do his or her best and they have goals in place for what they want to accomplish, they will be acting as leaders without intentionally leading.
