Teaching English...A Risk Worth Winning by Zach - October 2016 Scholarship Essay
Math, Science, English, or Social Students…which subject would I teach? My first thought is that I should definitely teach in a Social Studies area. I like history and I am really good at understanding the history timelines. If you want to discuss past wars or conflicts, I can keep up with the best of them. History is an easy choice for me to teach. The only hesitation I have is that I do not have a passion for history. When I think back on the very best teachers I have had, I recognize the passion for their subject area.
Math and Science is important and I know that I will need those skills in my future career as a Game Warden. However, the more I pursue my scholarship searching, I recognize my need for better writing skills. I cannot help but think about teaching English and writing. English has never been my favorite subject, but I did what was expected of me and nothing more. Both of my parents are educators, and I have heard them talk about how they are constantly learning about the subjects they teach. It makes sense that in order to teach, you must first learn. English and writing have never been my best subjects, but I will admit that is mostly my fault. I have had excellent teachers in my education, but because I did not have a personal connection to many of the stories we read or essays we wrote, I did not put forth my best efforts.
I am actually admitting that, yes, I should have paid more attention in middle school when Ms. Manfred said that boys have to be able to write as well as the girls. At the time I was just aiming for being a pro-fisherman, and they do not need to write essays. Now here I am, wishing I would have practiced just a little bit more. In this role play as an English teacher, I would have to complete my degree in English and education. I would have completed a Bachelor’s Degree, and I would have numerous writings under my belt. I am sure that the number of books and stories I have read are unlimited, and now I am prepared to share my knowledge of English and writing with students. Will I be perfect? Not at all. Will I be passionate? I think so.
You see, winning scholarship money is essential to my education. If they roles were reversed, I would definitely have to teach English, and I would definitely have to win this essay contest. If that does not stir passion in me, I am not sure what will!
