If the roles were reversed, which academic subject would you teach and why? by Yusef - October 2016 Scholarship Essay

If the roles were reversed, the academic subjects I would teach are Music and Music Theory. I would teach these subjects because as a musician, there is no greater gift than to positively impact future generations in an area of study one feels passionate about learning and then passing your gift and passion on to others. It's a great way for me to give back while loving what I do. Since the age of nine, many great teachers came into my life who taught me how to read music, play several different instruments, and understand music theory behind each instrument. As I matured as an adolescent, I knew my plan would be to make this my lifelong career. Throughout my schooling, many of these teachers also became my mentors and influenced me greatly. They kept me focused, kept me away from negative peer influences, helped me to overcome the affects of being bullied, and explained how a music career matches up with my talent, personality, and transferable skills which make me a well-rounded student and musician.

I would be teaching music and theory for students who want to learn acoustic guitar, electric guitar, mellophone, or french horne. These are instruments that I've carefully studied and realized their importance to our natural connection to music as human beings. I would love to teach music because it is important as a form of communication that connects us all. It is a method to channel thoughts, feelings, expressions that can never be defined by words. It is one of the primary effective means to bringing unity, peace, and harmony in our world. Music is a powerful tool and is completely magical. Music is fun, exciting, makes people cry, love, laugh, smile and sing. We also do the ultimate by speaking to God through musical expressions.

In closing, if the roles were reversed, teaching the various classifications of instruments would also keep my skills polished, contribute to continuing my music education while also pursuing a professional performance career so that I may set an example of what students can achieve after mastering their musical gifts. I would want to give back what my mentors gave to me. Especially young people who are more exposed to negative peer influences and bullying. If the roles were reversed, teaching music and music theory as an academic subject would be one of my greatest lifetime accomplishments.
