With Loss Comes Growth by Yunuen - July 2024 Scholarship Essay

Have you ever had that one thing that brings you back to a warm, meaningful moment in your life. It reminds you of something or someone you’d like to cherish forever. Despite your love for it—in times midsts—you grow and start to look at the world differently. Just like a flower, you’ve blossomed into a divergent version of yourself.

We all face difficulties in life, it is something we cannot interfere with or make it cease to exist. These difficulties can derive from many sources—whether that be from a barrier tumbling you down, or a certain something, or someone, holding you back. Sometimes, they may even come from something so special to you, that you’ve become blind to it. A flower may cherish the company it gets from surrounding weeds, but never truly see the hurtful impact it has on itself.

We, just like the flower, become blind of the things that bring us down when we have grown fond of them. We try searching for a reason to justify their actions and how they deteriorate one. Yet, those negative weights pulling you down ultimately fall too heavy and deteriorate you. Too far down that you aren’t blooming as you should. Each flower is different and unique in its own way—and it’s important to cherish that.

Cherishing oneself is one of the most important things to do. And if that means having to let go of such degenerative things, then so be it! Learning to let go of the things you love the most—but are causing one harm—can help you grow into a prosperous version of yourself. Like a flower, you cannot choose with what or with whom you’ll grow around. Yet, knowing when to leave certain things behind you can take you to places you’ve never imagined. Moving forward you’ll find yourself in a better state of mind, and with a surrounding of positivity.

I for one can say that having this important lesson in practice can further impact not only your mentality on life, but also your impact on others. Learn to share your cherished self from within, to others. Remember that flowers never keep to themselves, they learn and grow every step of the way—and with loss comes growth. Why can we not be the same?
