Adventure by Yuki - November 2014 Scholarship Essay

High school. In all honesty it may be the most difficult time in someone’s life. The students are conflicted and stuck between being children or adults and still have not discovered who themselves. It is difficult to know what one enjoys doing or who their true friends are. Although challenging, being in high school is also a time for adventure and exploration. It is a time to finally experiment with your personality and get ready to step into the world of independence. This is the most enjoyable aspect of high school, yet many box themselves in a dark cave and don’t allow themselves to flourish because of the fear of being judged by others. This is my advice to you; let yourself be free. Don’t ever allow someone to pressure you into doing activities you dislike. High school is an amazing place to blossom and find your passion, but it also can be an abyss if you permit yourself to follow the crowd and not chase your dreams.

I thoroughly understand that what I’m saying is a difficult task as a freshman, but trust me; I very much wish I could have told myself the same thing when I was entering high school. I was timid, afraid, and worried about taking risks and adventuring to discover new enthusiasms for me to pursue. I thought that if I kept quiet my first year I could catch up my next years of high school once I became more accustomed to my surroundings. What I did not think of was that all four years of high school are essential to take advantage of and learn as many things as possible. Whether you’re interested in dance, speeches, or math, make sure to sign up for clubs and organizations to target your curiosities. The more time you allow yourself to try new things, the more prepared you will be for college and beyond.

Believe in me, high school will all go by in a flash. Remaining dormant for one year out of four may not seem like it will affect you much, but at the end of senior year you’ll wonder when all of that time flew by. You’ll wish you had more time to explore more fields of interest and spend time with your loved peers. Appreciate and take advantage of the facilities that your school can offer you and challenge yourself to keep your schedule busy. I know you won’t regret it.
