The Influences of Social Studies by Yuchen - August 2016 Scholarship Essay
The primary purpose of schooling is to provide the necessary foundation for the students by exposing them to different subjects ensuring that they have the basics prepared to step into the adulthood. With that saying, every subject taught in school has its uniqueness and important contribution to the development of students’ growth as a whole. of all the subjects learned in school, Social Studies has always impressed me with countless brilliant ideas from the past, encouraged and excites me to analyze the purposes behind things, which helped me appreciated the world that we have evolved into today and learn not to repeat historical mistakes.
Materials being taught in Social Studies commonly include wars and the strategic solutions of famous historical figures. Those ideas, although not always effective, but often prompted me to look at things in a different perspective which is very important in life. For example, the quote “If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor. If an elephant has its foot on the tail of a mouse and you say that you are neutral, the mouse will not appreciate your neutrality. ” said by Desmond Tutu, had encouraged me to not set aside in front of suppression and injustice in order to make the community better.
Things are not always what it seemed to be, Social Studies had express more than enough on that. In the subject, analyze events’ purpose and their connection is a challenging task. Due to that, I had developed a skill of easily analyzed and understand most of the things around me, especially social related.
Furthermore, this skill has helped me solved and prevented many problem in life, like relationship issues with friends, and figuring out answer on a quiz when I am totally confused with the answer choices.
There was an old saying that History always repeat itself. I agree with that, only if a mistake was not learned. Through Social Study lessons, learning about the different mistakes that were made in the past by various people, I had always asked myself did I made the similar mistake. While the answer is typically “No”, I would keep in mind that I should prevent the same mistake from happening. With fewer mistakes I made because I learned from it, I am improving myself to a better level.
Social Studies, unlike English, that taught me the art of word-uses and influential writing skill. Nor does it like math, which I learned the fundamental building block of our world. But, what made Social Studies unique to me is its role of acting as a candlelight in the dark, guided my decision making within the society. Sometimes what seem so mediocre is the one that will provide the most help overall.
