If I was a college professor by Yousef - August 2017 Scholarship Essay
If I were a college professor.
Whatever the title professor, teacher or Instructor I believe one of the most important things to do
when you are teaching a group of students is to have a lasting and positive effect. If I was teaching a
class one of the important teaching tools to have is an organized teaching plan that works for students.
It’s also important to realize that whatever your planned class material you may have students who
may struggle because not all students learn at the same speed or learning level.
If I was a professor I would be teaching classes on Anthropology, but more focused on archaeology.
I would show students how having an open mind and study all different aspects whether they agree
or disagree with different points of views is beneficial. It’s important to make the class fun,
interesting and engaging to get students excited about what they are learning. Some instructors spend
their class hour(s) standing in front of the classroom lecturing the entire class. Some lecturing maybe
required, but It is a bad teaching model when you out students to sleep or unmotivated. Some interesting
class activities I would do is small group projects, PowerPoint with images and short videos. One
important aspect that some instructors neglect to leave some time for student during class for asking
questions and helping with class material. I would also be the type of instructor that would spend time
after class for students who needed help or advice along with office hours. The most important thing I
would want to be remembered by my past students would be the positive and caring learning experience they
experienced and perhaps use the same teaching tools in the future.
