A Simple Question by Yasmin - July 2016 Scholarship Essay

To set the scene, I was entering my tenth grade year, the dawn of a new era in my young life. However, I am reluctant to say that back then I was a shy student. I was not the type of student to ask teachers for extra help, for fear that they would think less of me. Nonetheless, I was extremely eager to begin my biotechnology class because it was the first year that Vero Beach High School had offered the class. I was about to embark on a journey of education, and as I later found out, confidence in myself.
I must admit that I did not know what to expect in my new biotechnology class, but I did survive through the suspenseful first week of information on laboratory safety. My biotechnology class was taught by an exciting new teacher, Mr. Bush, who soon proved to be an ally. As the year progressed, I decided to join the local science fair competition, in hopes to display my enthusiasm in science. I had arranged all of the paperwork necessary and decided on a project topic. The only problem, the location I had picked out earlier was no longer vacant. As I had nowhere else to look, I decided to take a chance and ask my biotechnology teacher if he had any room to spare in our classroom for me to conduct my experiment. As I explained earlier, I never enjoyed asking my teachers for help, but in my current state I had no other option. It turned out to be the most enjoyable little chat I’ve ever had with a teacher because Mr. Bush granted me permission to run my experiment in the classroom and offered me some help with my experiment. My confidence and morale leaped and ever since that experience, I have never been afraid to ask a teacher for some help. Because of my simple question, I learned a valuable lesson on confidence from Mr. Bush.
When I entered Vero Beach High School as a sophomore, there was no pamphlet on how to strive in my environment. Now, thanks to a positive experience, I can overcome new challenges with confidence. Thanks to Mr. Bush, who helped me, I am no longer afraid of asking my teachers for some extra help. I have now proven myself capable of confidence and hope to help others as well. Most of the time, people only need a little boost to get them through their dilemma.
