Great Man, Great Book, Have Some Fun and Take a Look by Xena - May 2017 Scholarship Essay

“What book?” you say, sir.
Well Dr. Seuss of course, sir.
A genius who wrote for children,
Taught them never to let strange cats in.

Stories filled with foxes in socks,
And socks with foxes,
And funny things to play
With every single day.
Different worlds with trees that twirled,
He had a certain way with words.

He gave me books that taught me to be brave.
To act like Sam and never put down the ham.
To take just enough words to be understood
Because simple can be just as good.

Own a zoo and save the trees,
From loving your body to the smallest flea.
I couldn’t put his book down.
I must have looked crazy as I laughed out loud.
Who needs J.K Rowling, or R. L. Stine
When you got Seuss to occupy your time?

He told me all the wonderful places I could go
Just to be myself and forget the status quo.
Everything he wrote I savored.
Oh! How much he must have labored.

Such an influence he was to me,
That here I try to duplicate his poetry.
It is not so easy to match his rhyme,
But here I am spending my time
Thinking I’ll go 'head and give it a try.

I must admit this is not my major.
I am going into science where I can experiment with nature.
No need to ever write another poem on paper.
I had thought about writing this in an essay,
But decided to be brave and go another way.

It’s a little bit different, and very difficult,
Yet here I am trying to win a scholarship.
What do you say?
Just your vote can go a long way.
Help me win this scholarship and make my day.
