Only I Can Change My Life by Wyatt - November 2018 Scholarship Essay
Carol Burnett once said, "Only I can change my life. No one can do it for me." I believe that this quote beautifully encapsulates the way that I try to live my life. Therefore, it is the quote I will likely use for my senior quote. I admire it partially because it is condensed down into two short and to the point sentences. However, the two main reasons I have chosen it are that it both reflects upon how I was raised and on how I engage in day to day activities.
I was always raised to be my own man. To be truthful, not take handouts, and most importantly in relation to this quote, working hard to earn the things you have. As someone who was raised on a family farm, I know what it means to work until every last cow is fed, every sheep has been sheared, and every dog has been given water. All these constant chores, duties, and responsibilities crafted me into having the mindset that only I can truly change my life under normal circumstances. That only I can build upon my own experiences and apply them to my life every day.
Accordingly, I applied the values seen in both the quote and my past into my present. I engross the ideals that were formed within me as a young boy. I vigorously try to incorporate Burnett's words into every occasion I am presented with. While others may let other people dictate the direction in which their lives will follow, I continually strive to fulfill my own aspirations. I take advantage of the opportunities provided to me, opportunities much like this scholarship.
So while Carol Brunett may have not been talking about me when he stated this quote, I have crafted my life around the same ideas as he once stated. His ideology of changing your own life for the better is uncannily similar to the principles upon which I was raised and try to exhibit every day. That is why Brunett's saying would be most fitting for me as my senior quote.
