Pump Station Hydraulics and Hydrology by Wyatt - August 2017 Scholarship Essay
California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly), California is where I earned my bachelor's degree in environmental engineering and I am going back to Cal Poly in September to get my master's degree in civil/environmental engineering. My master's program will focus on water resources engineering and will be associated with the civil/environmental engineering department. During my four years I have taken many water classes that range from fluid mechanics to groundwater hydraulics and hydrology. After taking these classes for my undergraduate degree I have really enjoyed the water resources engineering field.
For my senior project I was in a team of 9 environmental engineering students and we were tasked to design a wastewater treatment plant for the city of Cayucos, California. I threw myself into the position that designs the pump stations that pumps water to the wastewater treatment plant and out of the wastewater treatment plant. This position involves finding how long the pipelines need to be, the diameter that the pipelines need to be, the friction that is caused throughout the pipelines, and the size of pump that needs to be implemented in the pump stations. I thought that this was a very interesting and intricate process to design a pump station.
Carollo Engineers is where I am currently working before I start my graduate program at Cal Poly. Here at the office we have a man named Mike who is at the top of the list at our company for designing pump stations all over the country. He has been able to shed some light on pump station design to me and it all has been very interesting to me. After designing the pump stations for my senior project and being exposed to pump station design in the real world, I think that Pump Station Hydraulics and Hydrology would be a great class to teach at a university.
