*Always Ask Questions* by Winnie - April 2016 Scholarship Essay

My advice to Young People.

“Don’t aim for success if you want it; just do what you love and believe in, and it will come naturally.”- David Frost

Being a senior in high school, I feel I have experienced most of the ups and down of the teenage years. I never really asked simple questions about the smallest details like joining a club/ group. My first advice to you young people is to do activities that interest you by asking questions about it first.

If you like sports, join a team, you never know when you like something until you try it. If you like learning about foreign languages, customs and food, join a foreign class and club. (Ex: French club, Spanish club, German Club, Latin club etc...) They are bound to have a club where you can meet other people who enjoy your desire to be bilingual. If you’re more into sketching, doodling, crafting and drawing, I suggest an art club and class. You’d be able to learn new ways to expand your creative mind and push yourself to draw and create things you’ve never done before. If you’re more into debating with people and researching to prove your point, join debate club. This also links to Speech club and Student Congress club. Speech club can help you speak in front of people so you get comfortable and not so nervous but only if you practice, like in front of your family or a few close friends before you do it in front of 10-25 people. Student Congress goes more into politics and ability to write (persuasively) where you talk/debate serious issues and whether you are for it and factual reasons as to why it is a better chose. You’d be able to meet people from around your state in tournaments and broaden you branch of friends. If you love acting, join a theatre class and drama club or an “Improv Club” (improvising a scene that you make up, usually less than 10 minutes with teacher approval of appropriateness). If you’re passionate about helping the environment, join the environment club and find opportunities to volunteer in your community. You could go ask your counselor about the clubs that your school offers and maybe create the club that you’re passionate about with their help.

Just make sure you do the classes that you love and not following someone else’s wishing. If you believe in yourself and work your hardest for it, you can never be truly unhappy about what you’re doing. Remember, Questions are never stupid no matter if other people giggle at it, keeping in mind to be appropriate. Never be scared to ask a question if you honestly don’t know, ask about it. Clarification and doing work right is better than doing something when you have no clue and getting it wrong.
