What is your favorite non-traditional way to learn and what are you currently learning outside of school? by Wilna - September 2024 Scholarship Essay

My favorite non-traditional way to learn comes from real-life experiences and challenges. Growing up in a tough environment filled with domestic violence, homelessness, and personal loss taught me more than any classroom ever could. Life itself has been my greatest teacher, pushing me to adapt and grow through adversity.

Currently, I’m learning about resilience and caregiving. As a child, I took on the role of caregiver for my little sister after our family faced many hardships. Watching her struggle made me realize how important it is to provide love and support. This experience sparked my passion for nursing. I want to learn how to care for others in a professional setting and help those who are going through tough times, just as I did.

Outside of school, I spend time volunteering at local shelters and community events. This hands-on experience allows me to understand the challenges many families face and the resources they need to improve their situations. It also teaches me about compassion, patience, and the importance of community support. I try to soak up every moment spent with individuals who need help and encouragement.

I believe learning happens in many different forms, not just through textbooks or lectures. Each day presents a new lesson, and I'm eager to embrace those lessons as I work towards my goal of becoming a nurse. I want to offer a helping hand to pregnant women and children who are going through tough times. My journey has shaped my desire to create a stable future for myself and to make a positive impact in my community. I’m driven by hope and determination to turn my challenging experiences into something meaningful for others.
