Love of Music by William - April 2025 Scholarship Essay

Music is a huge part of my life. Whether I am listening to music or playing an instrument, I find it to be very enjoyable. My interest in music grew when I started marching band in high school. I loved going to practice and working on show music with my friends. I was always interested in improving my skills. I have learned so much about music from my grandma, musicians at my church, and teachers at my school. I also really enjoy listening to music. A great way to learn about music and improve my musical abilities is by attending other people’s performances. I like to attend live concerts and watch amazing performances on the internet. I have multiple books to help improve my technique and understanding of music. I could spend my whole day listening to, learning about, and performing music.
I did not realize how big the world of music is until high school. Learning about it is my favorite topic in school. Music is very complex, and it takes time and thinking to create good music. Music theory is not simple, and composers have to put in a lot of effort. People who perform the music have to put in hours of practice and dedication.
I currently play multiple instruments including snare drum, bass drum, quad toms, crash cymbals, glockenspiel, xylophone, vibraphone, marimba, timpani, percussion instruments (e.g. cow bell, triangle, chimes), piano, and organ. In college I would like to continue my study of music while pursuing a music performance degree. This scholarship will help me accomplish this goal and share my talent and love of music with the world.
