Technology: Bringing Skills To Student by William - January 2020 Scholarship Essay

Technology is all around. Everywhere you look technology exists. It can be perceived as positive and also as a negative depending on the situation and the observer. For me, technology has had a very positive impact on my learning experience. Growing up in the 21st century, I have essentially grown up with technology available in every period of my life. The biggest impact of technology for my future has been my exposure to new technologies in the classroom.
Starting in elementary school we began utilizing computers and technology to enhance our learning experience. As I moved into middle school and junior high, exposure to technology actually started expanding my awareness and skillsets in newer technology options. In junior high school, we had the advantage of such technologies as CADD programs and 3D printers. Being able to use these types of technologies contributed greatly to my interest in pursuing a career in Aerospace Engineering.
As I moved into high school, exposure to technology continued. Laptops were handed out for students to utilize for their classes. Testing and homework were completed electronically. Taking tests electronically was very beneficial because scores were received automatically and some homework was allowed to be attempted multiple times providing feedback and direction on areas of improvement that were required. In addition, in high school I continued to gain knowledge in CADD programming and other technologies that will prove very useful to my future.
One experience that provided a strong realization of how the exposure to technology through my classroom and educational experience has set me apart was when I attended an engineering day camp at OSU. Most of the other students who attended had not been exposed to some of the same technologies I had become familiar with and this provided me an advantage over the other students. It also allows me to step up and be a stronger leader among others because I feel more confident in my abilities and understanding of technologies so that I may help and assist others.
In summary, technology is a part of our everyday life and for me has always been there. But even today, not everyone has the same access to technology especially in the classroom and educational setting. Technology is so important to drive interest in knowing which direction to take your future and confidence in being able to achieve your dreams.
