In ten years time. by Waleed - December 2015 Scholarship Essay

Often times I find myself in worlds that only exist to me. Thinking of things that make me wonder what reality is and what reality means to others. I hope the imagination that takes over my life will one day help me improve the lives of many. Whether I am the sole deliverer of something so great, or a small piece of something much larger, I care not. To make an impact on the world, that in my mind will last beyond my mortal self is one of my deepest desires. Most of us realize education is the key to improving the world around us, creating things and ideas that help us live our daily lives and move forward in time with ever increasing ease. I plan to use my education to do just that.

One field that interests me in particular is energy and fuel. Our world today relies on fossil fuels to power it, fossil fuels that we all know are not renewable and negatively affect our environment. I understand the need to power an entire world, however what I do not understand is why we continue using such detrimental means to do so. Should we not strive to make the world a better place for future generations? From my limited research I realized something that made me think. We have been using and improving on an idea that was developed in the late 1600s for electricity. Steam turbines are how we get our energy from nuclear and coal-fired power plants to power our schools, businesses, homes, and many other things. While I don’t see that as much of an issue I do feel that there must be a more efficient way to provide electricity to the masses. A better way to harness the power that those fuels offer us, or a better fuel all together. Something that eats away at me even more is how much energy we truthfully waste in internal combustion engines. Energy that is expelled in the form of heat that we neutralize by cooling the engines down, wasting a large amount of that energy.

In ten years I hope to find myself working on a project that will change the way we extract energy and the sources of that we extract that energy from. Though I currently lack the knowledge that would allow me to do so, I do have the ability to gain such knowledge through education. Education isn’t only a way to learn more, but is also a place to interact with others that have like minded interests. Learning new ideas that will in turn help me think of many more ideas, plus working with peers that share the same dream that I do. That is surely how education will help me reach my goal for the next ten years and many years after.
