Just a Touch of Advice by Wakita - April 2016 Scholarship Essay

Anyone who is entering or just about to enter the hallways of high school can be quite anxious. For example, what are your classes going to be like, what the students are like, what if it’s just like the movies, bullying, friends, gossip, even wondering where the cafeteria and bathroom is at. Well, the good news is that it most certainly isn’t like the movies. You, just need to relax and let the teachers or even student council show you the ways and means of the school.
When entering freshmen year or any year or just new to the school, you should be able to feel the environment around you. Just grab onto the feeling that you have to put the big kid pants on now. When signing up for classes, go for what you think will benefit you into the career field you’re thinking of going in. Sign up for classes that’ll give you a challenge or discover your options but will not be “laid-back.” All the hard work will add up trust me. When you’re entering your class, and getting over with the introduction part, get to actually know some people because they could be helpful in the future. You need people to communicate with, especially if you miss the class hour. Always ask questions while you’re doing course work. Just like my principal said, always think about what you’re doing and what it’s implying and if it’s related to anything you’ve seen or learned.
Studying should be a habit during these times. Repetition or memorization will be helpful. When studying always do something that’ll keep your head in the books instead of all over the place. For example, listening to music while reading over your notes or leaving a candy after every couple pages. One thing, that could most likely never do you wrong is doing research on stuff you don’t know about or even looking up definitions. Remember; if you can’t get it ask for help from any students or even the teacher themselves.
Involvement is likely to do you better than bad. If you’re looking to receive a higher education after high school, activities will be something they’re looking for. There are many clubs and organizations to be a part of. Get in and be social with the school and meet new people who also could share the same interest with you.
Remember your sweet 16. Here’s what “sweet 16” is – 4 years of math, 4 years of English, 3 years of lab science, 2 years of social science, 2 years of foreign language, and 1 year of fine arts or CTE classes. Don’t just try to get the credits in! Make sure you do your best to excel in each class. Show your full potential and never give up.
