Effects social media has on our learning by Vivian - March 2022 Scholarship Essay

Have you ever felt the urgent need to just check your phone although you know you need to finish your homework assignment? If you have then you are not alone.

As technology rises, both the pros and cons of effects on the way students learn from social media also rise. Many people have controversial opinions on technology and if it is taking over our world. Personally I have noticed that social media, although distracting, can actually be very beneficial for my learning experience. Social media contains many networks that can help me for example when looking for scholarships or universities I want to apply to. A year ago this online learning was truly put to the test. Many students struggled during this time because learning through a screen was just not the same as being in person and feeling the true environment of being in a classroom with your peers. Online learning caused many students, including myself, to lose a lot of motivation. Aside from this there were many difficulties, for example no wi-fi. Students who didn’t have accessibility to the internet had to struggle all year long with their computers cutting off or not working at all because they froze. On the other hand, this type of learning experience really opened my eyes to how everyone as a community could keep moving forward and succeed even through a pandemic. Social media also provides many resources for students to help them in their academic learning. For example when confused on a math topic I can simply search up a Youtube video about it and get instant help.

In conclusion, social media has caused many struggles for students trying to learn, but also allows students to have better ways to learn.
