All college students should be required to study abroad. Studying abroad gives students a unique opportunity to learn more about the world and the people that surround them. Living in a new place can give people a new perspective on life when they learn the ways of a different culture. I have studied abroad and personally know the benefits of doing so. In 4th grade I moved to Singapore for two years. Having never experienced anything like it I was pushed far out of my comfort zone, but my discomfort gave me the ability to grow in a new situation. Every day I experienced a new challenge, such as harder classes, learning a new cultures expectations and customs, and even learning a new language. I began to learn more about the new people that surrounded me, thus growing a greater appreciation for them.
As I adjusted to my new surroundings and became accustomed to Singapore as my home, I realized how much I had changed. My experience in this different culture taught me about the value of education and hard work, as well as the importance of respect. I was also ingrained with a sense of love for everyone, in Singapore everyone treats each other with love and respect. Random strangers were referred to as Aunty and Uncle instead of him or her.
Studying abroad is a learning experience in more ways than one. It can facilitate acceptance of other cultures and give people the ability to explore the world. It is a priceless opportunity that everyone should experience. If everyone had this opportunity to learn about a different culture hands on, the world might be a more loving and benevolent place.
