My Discovery for Life by Vincent Jon - April 2025 Scholarship Essay
I lounged upon the cerulean lake, letting the current sway my free body in every direction. My eyes opened, observing the luscious trees and vibrant flora snuggly surrounding the sapphire water. I inhaled then dipped my head under and detected a lone fish wriggling through the coral forest. The loner had a mesmerizing silver coat of scales. A heftier fish swam by, circling over its smaller neighbor. Questioning its behavior, I trailed along. Then subsequently, one fish remained. I was a bit bewildered in that instance, but a call from a grand bird deviated my attention. Head up, I observed the magnificent beauty pierce through the blue blanket, followed by two smaller duplicates behind. The three fairies landed on the canopy of the emerald roof, feeding on the carcass of a fish. I swiveled around, smiling for each interaction I identified between the organisms. The minute characteristics over the circle of life left me smiling.
I stared at the pocket-sized cadaver in front of me. A day in Biology had us students participate in the ubiquitous experiment of dissecting a frog. The pungent smell and sour look deviated the interests of students, but I kept on surveying. My partner extracted several organs from the gaped chest while I fascinated over each structure taken and their corresponding function: the intestines and stomach for digestion, the heart for circulation, the lungs for respiration. My biology teacher explained over how each system cooperates with one another; I reminisced back to the vacation in the Philippines. The rainforest, the fish, and the birds. The two experiences emerged an inquisitive idea: I want to follow the systematic structure of life.
