Gift cards as a gift can open the floodgates of opportunity. Do I save them for a big purchase or use them immediately for a quick reward? After my eighth birthday, I found myself with a treasure trove of awesome gifts: Lego sets, a new bathing suit with a matching towel, a paint set, and a gift card. That gift card held an enormous value of fifty dollars. To a third-grader, the possibilities seemed endless. I considered purchasing walkie talkies so my sister and I could explore and stay in touch, or perhaps a water slip and slide for some summer fun. After some extensive research (about four minutes), I found my purchase: a fetal pig dissection kit. In my science class, we dissected owl pellets, and I was fascinated. I wanted to delve deeper into the biology of different organisms.

With my gift card ready in hand my mother helped me order the fetal pig, complete with a full tool kit for dissection. The countdown to its delivery was intense. I prepared by watching instructional videos. After a week, the moment arrived. I realize this may sound strange: a child wanting to discover more about anatomy, but I remember that day with vivid intensity. I sat outside at the patio table and explored the amazing science with great respect. From that day on, I was fascinated with how the body works. My love for science, compassion for others, and my deep-rooted faith have led me to the study of nursing. I was accepted to Fairfield University Egan School of Nursing. This fall, I will begin the journey of the most rewarding and time-honored profession.
