Dinner With Martin Luther King Jr. by Victoria - February 2016 Scholarship Essay
If I could have dinner with any historical figure, it would be Martin Luther King Jr. without a doubt. Dr. King has been such an influence to the American society and his legacy still continues today. This was a man who truly stood up for what he believed in and didn’t have a problem in doing that. Through his motivational speeches and his charismatic personality, he easily won the majority of America over and even got them to help fight along his side. In my eyes, MLK is one of the most powerful individuals that the US has ever had which is why I would have dinner with him.
Throughout Dr. King’s years of living, he participated, and even led, quite a few marches, protests and also boycotts. This was his way of fighting against segregation without using violence. If I were to have dinner with him I would ask questions on the activities he was a part of. One of my main questions would be, “during any point in time, did fear almost make you give up and stop fighting?” Understanding his reasoning for the decisions he made would be the general theme to the questions I would ask simply because not many people would be willing to do what he did.
MLK had proven to be comparatively intellectual. I can imagine how deep and scholarly our conversation would be. Honestly, I believe that he would prove me with a whole new look on life and also teach me plenty of lessons on how to improve my ways of living. My reason for saying that comes from hearing his lectures. A favorite quote of mine derives from his very famous “I Have a Dream” speech. The quote says, “Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.” This essentially states that even though you may not know where the path you are on is ending, continue to believe in yourself and walk the path until you reach the finishing point. This absolutely makes me ambitious to do my work, graduate high school so then I can not only start, but also complete my four years of college.
Overall, I believe that having the opportunity to be in the presence of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. would not only be a great opportunity but it would also be life changing. Dr. King is and will always be a legend because of all the good he has done for the community. He is a man of greatness and I would be honored to have dinner with him.
