Future Me - Paying It Forward by Victoria - December 2015 Scholarship Essay
Ten years may seem like a long time; however, as I am now looking forward to the next stage in my life, I realize time is not as slow-moving as it can feel during a school day. Most people leave high school planning to go to college, but haven’t really thought long-term and where to go next.
I have measurable goals for my future: complete my Bachelors and Masters Degrees by the time I reach age 25, work in an art-education position with middle and high school programs to encourage others to explore their abilities, and advance to college-level teaching by my late thirties.
My family promotes education strongly. All of my uncles and aunts have attained degrees, from Bachelors to Doctorate level degrees. They set a plan in motion in their late teens and early twenties to obtain knowledge and skills in their strengths, and become subject matter experts. My grandfather earned his medical degree in another country, came to America and succeeded in achieving the “American Dream”: family, success and happiness. I wish to follow in their footsteps, but also “pay forward” these young minds and talents as my teachers have done for me.
My parents supported me as long as I can remember to succeed in school, and encouraged me to develop my passion for art and animation. Without their belief in my abilities, I may have waited longer to audition for a gifted art program and missed out on the experience. I have been fortunate to participate in this exclusive gifted program, learning from some of the best in their field. This advantage has helped me take risks with my artistic creations and garner some success by having my works picked for formal installations as well as attending a college level summer art program. I wish to provide that same support and encourage not just to my own children, but to those in school. Without those teachers showing me their talents, and encouraging me to explore, I would not have attempted to grow into my talents as early as I have.
By going to college, learning from new people and experts in their field of art, I know I can develop my own skills, as well as provide an example for those I hope to reach in the future. Education is the foundation of a strong, focused individual, and part of my foundation.
