Changing the world through Marine Biology + Cultural Anthropology by Victoria - December 2023 Scholarship Essay

It is my dream in life to leave a lasting positive impact on the world. I have a passion for the ocean, particularly marine life and conservation of it, by combating effects of climate change. I intend to be involved in the development of sustainable and effective ways to restore the world’s oceans. I will immerse myself in a worldwide community that is set on restoring and protecting the oceans. I will eventually complete a doctorate degree, becoming an expert in my field. I will work towards these high goals by starting with a degree at BYU Hawaii with a double major in Marine Biology and Cultural Anthropology.
I want to be able to form my own business or non-profit organization that will contribute to the conservation of endangered marine areas. I also want to be able to immerse myself in the global effort advocating for marine conservation and restoration, and studying Cultural anthropology will help me understand where the people and places I work with are coming from. Additionally, my education will help me to do things like open a summer camp for kids who want to learn about their oceans and/or maritime heritage.
Marine science is an important field of study in today's society. What happens in the ocean halfway across the globe affects us at home. Understanding what is happening to our oceans and learning how to keep them healthy is critical to the overall health and advancement of human society.
Additionally, cultural anthropology is crucial in today's world. It is the study of human culture. When we learn about the people we share the globe with, their core values, history, needs, and solutions, we as a human race can foster a community of love, understanding, and collaboration. This is the approach that I intend to take when addressing global problems concerning the world's oceans. This education that I am pursuing is an important contribution to the betterment of society and world peace.
The world is in need of all the good it can get. The oceans are in desperate need of saving. When we have healthy oceans, we have a healthy earth, and thereby a healthy society. Additionally, I intend to educate others about the ocean. When we as a society learn how to combat the debilitating effects of climate change, the world will be better for it. Additionally, I am a firm believer than an educated society is a healthy society. I intend to use my education to help spread knowledge to others about worldwide problems, and work together to find solutions.
My chosen majors will prepare me to address prevalent world problems. At BYU-Hawaii, I will be prepared with the intercultural and leadership skills to become a valuable contributor to my field. Within this environment I will be able to continually improve and develop my education, leadership skills, and character, leading to a life of meaningful contribution. The motto of BYU-Hawaii is, "enter to learn, go forth to serve." This sums up my goals in life perfectly. I want to change the world for good! I want to help our oceans and help people. I intend to use this education to immerse myself in a global community that fights against the debilitating effect that climate change has on our oceans. I have volunteered both abroad and in my local community, and I can't get enough of working and serving with other people. I want to use my education in a way that combines my passion for the ocean with serving and helping other people, whether it is in my local community or a global society. I intend to continue to use my education to devote my life to learning, education, and service!
