Thomas Murphy: Musical Superhero by Victoria - March 2023 Scholarship Essay
Ever since I have been in choir I have loved it, even with the hardships. So it was easy for me to think “Hey I should just be a choir teacher!” but then when I got closer to being an adult I realized that everything was about to be serious. So throughout senior year I decided I needed to think about the pros and cons and why I wanted to do it.
To begin with, I love choir and have loved it since fourth grade when my choral teacher Mr. Murphy taught me how to sing. He believed in me and saw the potential I had so he would work with me all the time. Though I didn’t believe I was that good at the time, he was able to see it. After working with me for a while, he gave me my first ever solo! That solo meant so much to me that I can still remember it to this day. From that day forward choir has been the love of my life and I enjoy learning more about it every single day. He showed me the wonders that music could hold.
Following that, I wanted to be a teacher because of my passion for choir. There is just something about listening back and being able to hear perfection. That split second when I am so confident in the music of an ensemble and I zone out just listening back at the wonderful sounds dancing about, I can't help but feel like that is where I am meant to be. In perfection, all the notes come out and sound like heavenly bliss. That split second brings me so much joy and makes me so happy yet calm. It brings me passion and with that passion brings me inspiration. I want to inspire young minds and hopefully give them the same passion that I have with music. With that passion I want them to be inspired to continue singing and maybe pursue it like myself.
So, with this being said I have fallen in love with choir and those pros have heavily outweighed the cons when it comes to being a choral teacher. I don’t think I could ever see myself leaving music because of the big influences and the moments of heavenly bliss I find within the music. I want to spread my passion for music and to spread the power that music has
on me and the people around me. My life has been built around music. I am so involved with music and I want to continue to have it in my life. Being a choir director is what I want to be and there is no changing that and I will put the students first in hopes of inspiring young musicians and shaping them to be thoughtful and well versed young adults.
