The Importance of Education by Victoria - December 2014 Scholarship Essay
Looking back to my days of Catholic education in elementary school through high school, my experiences with Catholic schooling has provided a good education and a base for faith. Although I am personally not a Catholic, learning about the Catholic religion, going to masses and celebrating the holidays has helped me find a base for my Episcopalian religion because there are a lot of similarities between the two. As a young child in elementary school, I was shy and quiet. However, the art, music and computer classes helped me find interests in both the arts and in music. The computer classes that we had quizzed us where the keys are and how to use the Internet, PowerPoint, Excel, etc. By having computer classes at such a young age, my typing skills has improved so much over the years that I can type very quickly without having to look at the keys.
Without education, I would not be interested in theatre, singing and writing. As a child, I was always interested in writing plays or short stories and wanted to know how to improve my writing. When classes became harder and introduced new vocabulary, my writing improved and I started to use historical aspects in my writing too. Having a class about introducing people to the arts helped me become interested in music and theatre. Musical Theatre has played a huge role in my life because it helped me break out of my shy and quiet shell and built up my confidence. I’ve been participating in musical theatre shows since middle school and I’ve taken multiple theatre workshops and classes.
Education and Theatre has helped shape who I am today because my confidence has grown tremendously from when I was a child. I no longer feel uncomfortable when I speak to teachers or to my peers because in theatre, you have to do a lot of scene work with other people. I have learned that there is nothing to fear when talking to people and asking them questions, despite how scary it may seem.
