Managing Time in College by Victoria - September 2014 Scholarship Essay
Everyone is heading up to college with a big grin on their face eagerly holding their loads of luggage. Most teenagers are ready to shove their past high school habits behind them. But what they don’t know is that all the habits they’ve acquired in high school are bound to give them the same results.
Studies reveal that college students spend half their time sleeping, and playing sports or another leisurely activity. The amount of time they spent in leisure was equivalent to the time they spent on their studies. The skill I believe is essential to obtaining success in college is time management. Time management is the ability to use one’s time effectively or productively, especially at work. Believe it or not, the way in which you manage your time has a direct effect on your entire college success. Whether you are studying, eating, spending time with friends, or working; it is essential to have a productive time frame.
Between family outings for pizza, or doing my homework, I’d rather go for pizza with family. Unfortunately, ignoring my conscience became pretty easy to do. There was a point where I wouldn’t even think of assignments until the night before school. I remember a night where my school supplies and assignments were left all over my table. I sank into bed, tired and exasperated at 1 o’clock in the morning because of my unfinished assignments. Even my passion for dancing was affected, because I didn’t get to improve myself by stretching my body at home.
Learning became increasingly difficult as a result of rushing my study time; I would continue to burn out in frustration of my goals that were never met because of lack of consistency, and persistence. I felt lazy, unaccomplished and baffled that I wasn’t getting my act together. The consequences of poor time management obviously results in stunted growth in any area.
I began to ask my friend, God, for help. He revealed to me a web site, which was full off tips to eliminate distractions. The website provided information on studies that showed students who were able to delay instant gratification, in other words social media, not only achieved higher grades and test scores but were also more likely to succeed in school and their careers. Finally, planning and eliminating distractions during studies have enabled me to focus on my goals more efficiently.
Irrefutably, time management is a balance that encompasses saving your energy, learning about yourself, setting up priorities, and successful planning. Sure, students are ready for the exhilarating feeling of college life from partying to getting their degree, but what makes it wonderful and worth it is organizing your time through it all.
