Embracing Differences Within the Human Race by Victoria - July 2016 Scholarship Essay

If there is one cause that every man and woman breathing should support, it is to embrace diversity. My 11th grade United States History teacher, Mr. Onze, taught me that we must appreciate the richness of difference that exists in our human family, and to empathize with all types of people, and wage war against discrimination and bullying based upon this. Bullying based on discrimination is still a large problem, even in schools today, often resulting because of perceived differences that make some students an easy target based on how they look or act. The world is full of unique and different people. These differences, no matter what they are, should be embraced and accepted. The human race is extraordinarily diverse in so many ways. Gender, ethnicity, race, class, religion, nationality, sexuality, philosophy, lifestyle, etc. The areas in which we differ are endless. Yet, at a basic level, we are all of the same human species. We experience highs and lows in life and strive to be happy and fulfilled.
Our common pains and joys are what bring us together, but our diversity is what makes us unique. It is what deems you or I our own special person, one who has never existed and will never exist again. I learned that understanding and accepting people from all walks of life is key to finding peace in our lives. But beyond that, it is of the utmost importance to making the world a place where all can live freely and without fear of judgement or discrimination.
